Robert J. Ellis is a founding partner of Canlas Ellis, LLC, with offices in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Conroe, Texas. He has more than 15 years of experience in government, business, and administrative law, as well as criminal defense and general litigation. He has advised many commercial and individual clients in a wide range of business law matters, ranging from taxes to licensing to labor issues. Attorney Robert Ellis has been licensed to practice law in Louisiana for 17 years, since 1999, and in Texas since 2005. He received honors as an Outstanding City Attorney when he was with the City Attorney’s Office in the City of New Orleans.
Mr. Ellis is a 1994 graduate of the University of Texas, where he earned his undergraduate degree in political science. He then went on to earn his master’s degree and juris doctor degree from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1998. He was licensed to practice in the state of Louisiana in 1999 and was also licensed to practice in Texas in 2005.
He served as Deputy City Attorney for the City of New Orleans from 2004 – 2011, and is an active member of several legal associations. He joined the American Bar Association in 1998 and the Louisiana State Bar Association in 1999. In 2005, Richard was accepted by the State Bar of Texas in 2005, and is a Charter Fleur De Lis member of the New Orleans Bar Association. He is a member of the Orleans Republican Parish Executive Committee.
Mr. Ellis has a long and impressive base of experience in all areas of government and corporate law. He has worked with the City of New Orleans on several special Task Forces involving municipal taxation and finance. He is General Counsel for many business owners, focusing primarily on corporate law and business development issues.
Mr. Ellis has had an extensive career in municipal government in a wide range of roles. While still in graduate school, he worked as director of government relations for Hibernia National Bank, where he gained experience working with state and federal legislators. After graduating, he focused his career largely on finance and municipal taxation. He served as chair of the Mayor of New Orleans’ Transition Team Task Force on Sales and Use Tax Collection and represented the City of New Orleans as special tax counsel.
In 2004, Mr. Ellis served the city as an assistant city attorney, and in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, assisted in the city’s recovery and rebuilding. He was promoted to deputy city attorney shortly thereafter and served as a representative of the New Orleans Municipal Employees’ Retirement Board, as well as an administrative law judge.
After serving the city for many years, Mr. Ellis pursued a career in private practice in 2011 as co-founder of Canlas Ellis, where he continues to advise clients in a wide range of legal matters, including business, government, and administrative law.
